New Year’s Eve in Prague
Come to Prague during the New Year period. Happily you’ll find it just like many other cities around the world. It starts coming to life as tourists and locals alike take to the streets, bars and restaurants to ring in the New Year in style.
No matter what type of party you’re after the chances are you’ll find something to your taste in Prague.
Here are a few ideas to get you in the mood.
Enjoy the build up
Try to time your arrival in the city to give yourself a day or two to explore before the big night. Join one of our fabulous walking tours to fully acquaint yourself with the city.
Come the 31st, expect the big tourist areas of the city to be full. Worth checking out are the big Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. These will stay open and be in full swing. There you’ll find souvenir stands as well as plenty of food and drink options to get you in the mood for a party.
Another popular option is to take a dinner cruise along the Vltava. With several companies offering a variety of packages you can expect to be wined, dined and treated to live music. The party continues all through the evening and into the new year. You’ll also have a prime spot for the New Year fireworks.
Party the night away
In our opinion the best fun can be found on the streets. Expect plenty of spontaneous gatherings, endless busking performances and festive atmosphere in all of Prague’s favourite spots. Just watch out for pickpockets who will be out in force. They are always looking out for those not keeping a close eye on their possessions.
As the big moment strikes fireworks will explode into the sky above Prague. The best place to watch them is from the Charles Bridge, Petřín Hill and around Prague Castle.
And, if you’re someone who prefers to spend their evening indoors and away from cold then just about every decent bar, restaurant and club will have a NYE program. Just be sure to book early because lots of places sell out often some months in advance.
But wait, the party’s not over yet
January 1st happens to mark the forming of the independent Czech Republic after it’s split from Czechoslovakia. As such, you’ll find many locals still in a celebratory mood. To mark the event, there is another firework display at 6pm from Letna Park which is in a raised level part of the city. Again the best place to watch is from one of the bridges or from Prague Castle.
