It’s location is in an authentic Budapest basement and is an excellent playground to rediscover and relive the past.
Furnished with goods collected from a 40 year period in which Hungary lived and worked under the yoke of Soviet oppression. This exhibition room is complete with sofas, bookcases, kitchen units and the indispensable tools of every true Socialist household. All the items you find here are the pride of the hammer wielding working class. Produced in the indefatigable factories of the former socialist countries. There is still an echo the carefree days of Hungarian “Goulash Socialism”. A period when Hungary was the “happiest barrack” under the Great Soviet Regime. You will be able to browse among a myriad of artefact’s. Explore books, certifications and badges. Open up some board games that were designed to teach a child how to grow up to be a decent Socialist. This exhibition room is where our Hammer and Sickle Tour starts. You’ll have sufficient time to immerse yourself in the room’s ambiance. Your guide tells you all about the 1956 uprising and the years spent in its aftermath, right down to the fall of the Soviet Union.
The tour also visits various historic sights in Budapest. You can see the actual scars that the revolutionary bullets left on some of the buildings. And can learn why we still have a Soviet memorial in the heart of the city. We’ll slowly make our way through the enormous cultural and political change that Hungary had to deal with over the last two decades. All the incredible stories told on the Hammer and Sickle Tour along with the clandestine atmosphere of the Communist Exhibition Room will give you a genuine insight into the Socialist reality that you’ve always wanted to see.
