Enjoying Krakow’s Street Food
An Introduction to Krakow Street Food
You can learn a lot about a country and its culture from how it does its street food. In Krakow, street food kiosks are all over the city, and it’s a popular pastime for locals to meet up with friends and enjoy a casual bite to eat. It is also a favorite pre or post-night out ritual for many locals.
Generally tasty and inexpensive, there is always an ongoing debate about where the best food is. Here you can find a few delicacies to look for during your tour of Krakow.
Finding the best street food in Krakow
A good place to start your search is in Kazimierz. Head towards Świętego Wawrzyńca 16. An outdoor food court that has on offer some of the best variety of street food in Krakow. Well-known for the Big Red Bus converted into a fast food restaurant, the square now welcomes a growing number of kiosks. Here you’ll find Belgian fries, pulled pork sandwiches and jacket potatoes, to name but a few of the mouth-watering dishes on offer. Although there is seating provided, the place is often full but the atmosphere always lively.
The humble sausage – a Polish favourite
In Poland, the sausage – known in Polish as a Kielbasa – can be found in many dishes and one of the best ways to savor it is cooked on the grill then served with grilled bread, fried onions and mustard. If you’re seeking the best in the city, you’ve got two options. Head over to Kazimierz’s Plac Nowy where you’ll find two grills that serve kielbasa. Alternatively, over at Grzegórzecka 4, there is a van called Kielbaski z Niebieskiej Nyski open every day, except Sundays, until 5am.
Where to snack in Krakow
For a smaller bite to eat, stop at one of the small blue kiosks that are located all over the city and pick yourself up a circular pretzel for about 2 PLN each. Topping choices include cheese, sesame or even poppy seed. However, if it’s something sweet that you’re after, head to Gorące Pączki, (English: Hot Donuts), on Szewska Street in the main square. Try the rose jam donut for a traditional Polish taste, or perhaps cream, chocolate or fruit jam.
Enjoying Zapiekanki – Krakow’s favourite street food snack
Last but not least, a guide to Krakow street food would not be complete without mentioning Zapiekanki. This is one of the best street foods found in Krakow. Half a baguette with cheese and mushrooms and completed with your choice of ingredients and sauce. The best ones are said to be in Plac Nowy’s rotunda although they can be found easily around town.
